Crystals for Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing
Posted On 26 September 2020
I love crystals for their beauty, colours, and how each one is unique. But crystals are so much more than attractive ornaments or jewellery. As someone with bipolar disorder and anxiety, I love to use my crystals for mental health and emotional wellbeing management. This article explores the reason we can utilise crystals for mental health, which crystals to use, and how to use them.
Everything is energy, including our bodies, thoughts, emotions, and also crystals. The rate at which energy vibrates is called the Dominant Oscillatory Rate (DOR). Our DOR is constantly changing and is affected by so many environmental and internal factors. When this happens, we experience many different symptoms, including physical and emotional pain.
On the flip side, the DOR of crystals is fixed. Each type of crystal has its own structure and chemical makeup which never changes, and therefore, the crystal’s DOR is reliable. The DOR depends on the composition and colour of the crystal, which is why each type of crystal (amethyst, rose quartz, selenite, etc) has a unique mix of healing properties and abilities. When we place the crystal on or near the body, its DOR changes our own by a process known as entrainment.
Crystal healing works so well for mental and emotional wellbeing issues because it can literally retune our vibrational frequency, which is definitely needed when we are experiencing the heavy, stuck energy of depression. Equally, they can calm the scattered, fearful energy associated with anxiety.
Of course, there are a myriad of reasons behind mental health issues, and If you read my disclaimer, you’ll see that in no way am I diagnosing or treating mental health issues with my advice. But, through personal experience, I have found that crystals help me to retune my energy. They lift some of the heaviness around my own depressive episodes and calm me when I am in an anxious or hypomanic state.
While not a fix-all cure, using crystals for mental health issues certainly helps me feel better and makes managing my mental and emotional wellbeing easier and more fun. If you resonate with the philosophy of energy healing and frequency tuning, you may like to try some crystal healing for yourself.
Which Crystals Should I Use?
I do believe in trusting your intuition to guide you to choosing the best gemstones for you. After all, there are so many reasons why our mental and emotional wellbeing becomes unbalanced and it is best to address the root cause rather than the symptom.
But, some of us do like an initial point from which to start our explorations and research, and so in the spirit of sharing what has worked well for me in the past, here are my favourite crystals for mental health and emotional wellbeing.
I absolutely ADORE this stone. I have a large selenite point and a selenite unicorn horn, and I sometimes sleep with them! Selenite is named after the Greek Goddess of the moon, Selene. It is associated with the moon and is known as ‘liquid light.’ Like a full moon on a dark night, selenite illuminates my way through the darkness and helps me find my way out.
Selenite is a powerful cleanser of negative energy. It is one of the few crystals that never needs cleansing because it doesn’t store negative energy. You can even use it to cleanse negative energy from your other crystals! Being such a powerful cleanser of negativity, it is perfect to use when feelings of anxiety surface. Anxiety is a manifestation of fear, and fear is the ultimate negative energy.
Selenite is my favorite of all my crystals for mental health because not only is it a light in the darkness of depression AND a soothing balm for anxiety, but it also balances moods and emotions. Bipolar is a mood disorder and my personal experience is that it gives me unpredictable mood swings and intense emotions. Selenite is a calming and balancing influence when these exhausting emotional highs and lows strike.
Chrysocolla is a recent addition to my crystals for mental health toolkit. I was drawn to a silver ring with a mottled green stone while browsing a vintage emporium. I didn’t know what the crystal was but I knew that once I put the ring on I just had to have it in my life. I later found out from a crystal expert that the stone is chrysocolla and when I researched it, so much clicked into place.
Chrysocolla is a powerful water stone – it facilitates flow in your life when you’re feeling stuck. When I am depressed, that is exactly how I feel. Stuck in a negative vibration that I can’t rise out of. Stuck feeling this way forever.
The energy of chrysocolla washes over me and like the tides of the ocean pulls me away from those feelings of being stuck. Introducing movement and flow to my energy at that time gives me enough space to work with other crystals to help raise my vibration further.
In addition, chrysocolla alleviates the feeling of isolation and loneliness that depression can make me feel. Chrysocolla is a heart chakra stone, and it can help to open this space when it naturally closes due to depression and anxiety. It can also help to mend a broken heart.
3: Rose Quartz
Talking of broken hearts, the very best crystal for when you’re feeling hurt and unloved is rose quartz. The gentle, soothing vibes of this pretty pink stone help to soothe away emotional trauma and tension.
Rose quartz one of my favourite crystals for mental health when self-love is needed. Often when we struggle with mental and emotional wellbeing issues, we focus so much anger and negativity toward ourselves. I know I do! I begin feeling guilty and unworthy and directing extremely toxic thoughts toward myself when I am in a period of bipolar depression.
I find that connecting with the loving energy of rose quartz helps me to quiet those thoughts and I can begin to see things from a different perspective. I can think about other people who love me, and how difficult it would be for them if I wasn’t around anymore.
Rose quartz helps me to accept love from others, and feel that I am worthy of receiving it. This beautiful gem envelops me in its nurturing energy and enables me to open myself to love from the universe, love from others, and love from myself.
I have a rose quartz facial roller that I use every evening before bed. This tool is used to roll over your moisturiser to drive it deeper into the skin. The massaging action helps to improve circulation to the skin, making it look rejuvenated and fresh. It is also great at reducing puffiness and inflammation. Connecting with the energy of the stone and doing this small self-care ritual before bed brings be into a beautiful space of peace and tranquility.
Amethyst is like a soothing balm to me. If it were an essential oil, it would be lavender. I feel that they radiate on a similar frequency. Amethyst has been used for centuries to help calm the mind, spirit and emotions.
I love meditating with amethyst because it helps me to enter a deeper state of meditation. I find that my amethyst meditations bring me a lot of insight as well, which makes sense because amethyst is also known as a stone for intuition and psychic development due to its connection with the third eye chakra.
Amethyst soothes anger and irritability, and It is great for protecting against negative energy, psychic attack, and electromagnetic radiation. It soothes anger and irritability and balances mood swings.
Amethyst is an excellent sleep crystal because of its ability to impart a peaceful, tranquil vibe. My nine year old son sleeps with an amethyst geode next to his pillow.
How to Use Your Crystals for Mental Health
Again, choosing how to use the stones you have selected is a personal choice and you should engage your intuition to see what feels most nourishing to you. Here are some ways I like to use my crystals for mental health.
1: Crystal Grids
I love making a crystal grid around my upper chakras and head so that I focus the crystal’s energetic power on my thoughts, emotions, and self-talk. I lay down on my bed and do a couple of minutes of meditation to calm and ground me. light some incense and sometimes I play soft meditation music or a sound bath.
I like to place a piece of clear quartz just above my head in the area of my Sahasrara (crown) chakra. Clear quartz is associated with harmonising the Sahasrara chakra, plus it amplifies the energy of all the other stones.
I then place a crystal on my Ajna (third eye) chakra to help with my thoughts, one on my Vishuddha (throat) chakra to help dispel negative self-talk, and one on my Anahata (heart) chakra to assist the cultivation of self-love.
I place the remaining stones intuitively in a pattern around my head. There is no right or wrong with this, trust your intuition to guide you. I lay like that with my eyes closed for as long as feels supportive to me.
You can also make crystal grids on a template or mat. There are many of these but the most popular are the Flower of Life, Seal of Soloman, and Metatron’s Cube. These are ancient sacred geometry patterns, the fingerprint of the universe. When combined with crystals they amplify the effects and create a powerful radiator of healing energy. You can buy mats like the one shown below, or print them at home for free. Ethan Lazzerini has kindly created three free printable crystal grid templates with instructions on how to use them.
2: Crystal Meditation
An excellent way to use crystals for mental health is to do a crystal meditation. Select your crystal and get yourself set up for meditation, holding it in your non-dominant hand.
Meditate in your preferred way for a few minutes so that you feel grounded and centred. Then, connect with the energy of the stone. Tune in to its frequency and ask it to heal you. Feel its vibrations washing over you, retuning and realigning your own DOR.
If it feels appropriate, you can ask the crystal for a message to help you move forward. Listen closely to your intuition and see if anything appears. If not, stay alert to any signs or synchronicities over the next few days, as your message may be delivered afterward.
If you struggle with sleep, especially due to anxiety, try a lavender and amethyst meditation before bed. Follow these steps:
Get yourself settled and comfortable for meditation. You can sit or lay down for this sleep ritual.
Dab some lavender oil (appropriately diluted if necessary) on your pulse points, third eye (Ajna) chakra, and heart (Anahata) chakra.
Hold a piece of amethyst in each hand. If you only have one piece, hold it in your non-dominant hand.
Tune into your breath and watch the ebb and flow of your inhalations and exhalations for a few minutes.
When a thought comes into your mind, acknowledge it and allow it to float on by, like a cloud across a lavender sky.
Feel the calming vibes of the stones radiate into your being, soothing away any stress and tensions from the day.
When you feel the ritual is complete, gently open your eyes to place your amethysts down, and snuggle into bed for a peaceful night’s sleep.
3: Programme and Wear Your Crystal
If your crystals for mental health are in a piece of jewellery or are small enough to carry, then you can programme them with your intentions of healing and wear them or carry them with you throughout the day.
Crystals have been proven to record thoughts. They hold the thought energy (intention) and amplify it out to you as you go about your day. Follow these steps to infuse your crystals with your intention:
Ensure you have cleansed your crystal in an appropriate way. Not all crystals can be physically washed in water so ensure that you research this properly for your chosen stone.
Take a few deep cleansing breaths to centre yourself, then bring your intention to mind in a clear and concise sentence.
Hold your crystal up to your Ajna (third eye) chakra, state your intention to the crystal and ask it to help you. You might say something like this: “I intend to feel calm and balanced in my mood and emotions. Selenite, please help my intention to manifest.” Or something like this: “Rose quartz, please help me to open my heart so that I can receive love from the universe, my family and myself.”
That’s it. Now you can wear your jewellery or place your small stone in your pocket and know that it is amplifying your intention into your energy field as you go about your daily routine.
You can buy simple strings of crystal beads to wear for this purpose. They come as bracelets, necklaces, and meditation malas.
